Four deaths have caused the Onewheel to be recalled

Future Motion’s Safety Update: The OneWheel GT Model and All OneWhale Plus Models are Powered by Future Motion

300,000 self-balancing vehicles in the US are affected by Future Motion’s recall of every one of them. The company now wants to make their products more safe after four known death cases in the next two years, three of which were without a helmet.

To install the update, owners must connect their Onewheels to the accompanying app and run a firmware update — the process is fully explained in a new video.

For early adopters, however, owners can receive a “pro-rated credit of $100 to the purchase of a new board,” according to Mudd. After owners confirm that they have dumped the old model, the credit will be issued.

It’s rolling out a “haptic buzz” alert function that “riders can hear and feel” when they may be in danger of crashing. The Onewheel GT model will have a safety update within a week, the company said. The Onewheel and Onewheel+ are not eligible for the update.

The company issued the voluntary recall of 300,000 boards in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission after initially resisting CPSC’s push for a recall several months ago.

On the safety commission’s “unjustified and alarmist claims” concerning a head injury in e-skate skateboards

The reported deaths resulted from head trauma, the safety commission said. The rider didn’t wear a helmet during the incident, in at least three deaths.

The maker of the e-skateboard denied the commission’s “unjustified and alarmist claims” and said it had no reason to stop using their boards.
