In Arizona, abortion politics are playing out in the campaign trail

The Alabama Supreme Court ruling on abortion as a political gift to the democrats? Tammy Duckworth: Why abortion is a human right for a woman fighting abortion

Shapiro: In the years since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Democrats have found that reproductive rights are consistently a winning issue whenever the question is on the ballot. As I mentioned, you’re a co-chair of the Biden-Harris reelection campaign. And I know that for the personal reasons we’ve discussed, you object to the Alabama Supreme Court ruling. Is there a part of you that sees it as a political gift to your party?

Duckworth: I’ve been trying to build bipartisan support for well over four years and they’re not coming forward. They do not restrict access to abortion because it’s not about their limit on the number of abortions, but because they define a fertilized egg as a human being.

I have been saying this for years, “Listen, we have a problem here.” Because in my case, we fertilized five eggs, three of them were deemed non-viable, and we discarded the three non-viable because if I were to implant those, I would have had a miscarriage with all three eggs. I was told by my doctor in 2013 that with the personhood amendments, I could be convicted of murder for throwing out three non-viable eggs, and so we could no longer practice reproductive medicine.

Tammy Duckworth is from Illinois. I have struggled with infertility for over a decade after my war service in Iraq. I had two beautiful girls through in-vivo fertilization, maile and avon. But it took 10 years for Abigail to be born, and many, many cycles of fertility treatments to get to the point where I have these gorgeous girls.

Lake supported the overturn of abortion’s legality because she viewed it as a state’s rights issue. Lake has been advocating for pregnant women to have an abortion in favor of encouraging them to have babies rather than do so. And if elected to the Senate, Lake says she’d vote against a federal abortion ban.

Lake says on tape that abortion will be banned in Arizona except for saving a mother’s life. “And I think we’re going to be paving the way and setting a course for other states to follow.”

“In the Senate, I will advocate for increased access to fertility treatment for women struggling to get pregnant,” Lake wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “IVF is extremely important for helping countless families experience the joy of parenthood.”

Gallego points to the Alabama Supreme Court ruling as the latest example of Republicans, like Lake, claiming to support reproductive freedoms. But their actions – like the Senate’s appointment of three U.S. Supreme Court justices who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade under former President Donald Trump – don’t match the rhetoric, Gallego said.

If she says she’s for this now, how could you choose that person who just a few months ago said it’s okay to arrest abortion providers? Gallego asked.

Lake could not be reached for comment on her position on abortion. She didn’t discuss the issue during her speech at the conference.

Reproductive Freedom For All: Where Are We Going? Timmaraju’s Campaign and Reply to Gallego’s Voter for a Proposed Voting Measure

Mini Timmaraju is the president of Reproductive Freedom for All. abortion access and reproductive freedom are going to be the primary points of the spear.

According to Timmaraju, candidates are seizing on abortion as an opportunity to be proactive on the issue, rather than simply opposing abortion bans.

Gallego says he’ll do away with the Senate’s filibuster to codify Roe v. Wade, a position that earned him the endorsement of Reproductive Freedom for All, even though the organization backed Democrat-turned-independent Senator Krysten Sinema in her last election.

“So the perfect thing is you have Ruben [Gallego] at the top of the ticket in the state, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris at the top of the ticket nationally,” Timmaraju predicted.

Timmaraju is also banking on a groundswell of support from an expected ballot measure to enshrine abortion rights in Arizona’s constitution. So far, it’s dovetailed nicely with Gallego’s own campaign – while out gathering signatures to qualify Gallego for the ballot, some of his volunteers are also gathering signatures for the abortion ballot measure.

Maryse was at the Reproductive Freedom for All event and was gathering signatures for Gallego. While there isn’t any one issue that’s driving her to support him, she does recognize that the previous warnings of the end of federal protections for abortion rights have come to fruition.

“Well, I’m still learning about that,” Waldron said. I’m supportive of it even though I will have to read through the entire initiative.

The hard work is in tying it all together, and making sure that people don’t get lost in the information that is being thrown at them during a presidential contest.

But Timmaraju said she’s encouraged, as are Democrats nationally, that every time abortion has been on the ballot, voters have consistently voted to protect abortion rights.
