Rivian has R3 and R3X electric SUVs

The R2 Moment of Rivian: Where the EV Market Comes From, When Will It Be Built, And Where Will The Future Go?

Rivian is known in the industry as a pure play EV company that only makes battery-electric vehicles. No hybrids. No gas. Just electrons. That also means no backstop, no safety net. Rivian takes the EV market to the cleaners if it stumbles.

The R2 is a major moment for Rivian — no question there. But that car won’t start production until 2026 at the earliest, making this year and next crucial if the company hopes to live long enough to see it.

The introduction of a new $5 billion facility in Georgia will create a turbulent year for the young company. Rivian was founded in 2009 but did not come out of the shadows for over a year. It made its public markets debut in 2021.)

The stock slide was triggered by the production numbers. Rivian predicted that it will produce 57,000 vehicles in four years, less than Wall Street was expecting and less than the 80,000 vehicles produced last year.

It’s an especially vulnerable period for a young company to be in. And Rivian lacks a financial benefactor with bottomless pockets like Lucid Motors has with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. Amazon owns a 16 percent stake in Rivian, making it the company’s largest stakeholder. The company had a partnership with a delivery van, which ended last year.

You don’t need a crystal ball to know there will be a lot more competition by that point. More EVs for sale will be made by companies with more experience making mass-market vehicles. Rivian will need to sell more vehicles in order to survive the short term.

Legacy car companies have whole lineups of internal combustion engine vehicles to fall back on when times are tough. Even though they lose billions on EV development and production, Ford, GM, and others are reporting strong hybrid sales, which helps relieve some of the sting.

Rivian surprises with R3 and R3X electric SUVs: What’s up with R1T, R1S and EDV?

The R3 is “designed with even tighter dimensions–and at a lower price point–than R2,” the company said — though it didn’t immediately release the price of the R3. Reservations for the R3 will start at a later date.

The company said the R3 and R3X will launch soon after the R2 to ensure a smooth launch. This is based on “learnings” from the company’s simultaneous launch of the R1T, R1S, and EDV delivery van. The international availability of the vehicles will be decided after their launch in North America.

Rivian’s new 4695 cylindrical battery cells are 15 millimetres taller than the 46,800 cells used byTesla. The native version of the NACS charging port built into the vehicle is what it will have. The R3 will be 80 percent in 30 minutes with DC fast charging.

A sensor suite that includes 11 cameras and five radars is one of the improvements the company is promising. The company didn’t specify what level of automation it was shooting for with the R3

A rear gate window that lifts up to let in extra storage was highlighted during the event by Scaringe. He called it a flipper glass but it was not certain if he was referring to it as a nickname or something more official. He said that the R2’s rear seats fold flat for added cargo space, which makes it an opportunity for camping.
