The NHTSA Cybertruck Recall Impacts All Model Year (‘MY’): A Brief Overview and a Little Help from the Industry

The recall impacts “all Model Year (‘MY’) The fault is estimated to be present in 100 percent of the vehicles, which was manufactured from November 13, 2023 to April 4, 2024. This is everyCybertruck delivered to customers since it was launched last year.

The NHTSA stated that if the pedal pad became trapped in the interior trim above the pedal, the performance of the pedal will be affected and that it may increase the risk of a collision.

The saving grace for Cybertruck owners, which the NHTSA notes as well, is that the brake overrides the accelerator. That hasn’t always been standard in the automotive industry; in 2010, Toyota recalled millions of vehicles after thousands of complaints of unintended acceleration. NHTSA proposed a regulation that would mandate brake override technology. The proposal was eventually withdrawn, but the industry still largely came around, says David Friedman, former NHTSA acting administrator.
