The Vertical Folding Project: V68, a Greenlit Project for the Apple Galaxy Fold 6 and the Z Fold 6. What Is It All About?
The report says that the project, called V68, has moved past the conceptual stage and that suppliers are involved, although there is no guarantee it will be a reality. This would be Apple’s first major design change to its flagship product since the iPhone X in 2017. Apple did not respond immediately to the request for comment.
If you break the internal screen on your folding device, you will be able to get a free replacement screen, or a reduced price for screen repairs if you buy it two years from the date you acquired it. That helps remove some apprehension when dropping wads of cash on a phone with a hinge.
Still, it is so much easier to recommend the Flip6 to anyone. Who doesn’t want a tiny phone in their pocket that expands to a 6.7-inch screen with a flick? The battery life, thanks to a beefier 4,000-mAh cell, is a little better, though it requires a once-a-day charge with average use. During the half-day when I walked throughout Montparnasse, I had to borrow someone’s charge so I was not stuck without a phone.
Apple has reportedly tested products in two sizes, but this greenlit project is for a folding flip phone, much like the Razr from Motorola or Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip6. These kinds of flip phones will let you use a full-size mobile device and then fold it into a pocket or bag. You get the same experience in a small package. There’s usually an external “cover screen,” and you can imagine Apple will likely create a way to access notifications, widgets, and even Siri (with its upcoming AI-infused improvements) there.
The Android world has enjoyed folding smartphones for six years, but Apple stans may soon be able to take part—a folding iPhone might arrive in 2026, according to a report from The Information.
The inner screen of the Z Fold 6 is just as impressive as ever. The crease looks about the same — it disappears when looking at the display straight-on, but you’ll see it from an angle. It can reach up to 2,600 nits in bright light, but it is a little uncomfortable to use outside due to the crease.
The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is a Great Phone That’s Out of Ideas, and Why Is It So Hard to Make Sense Of It?
It’s objectively luxurious: spacious and with every amenity you could think of. But it’s a little impractical, and you never feel quite as at ease as you do in your own home. There might be real consequences if dirt is tracked in the wrong places. It is more comfortable than home, and you are ready for that sigh of relief when you check out.
You need to agree to a series of terms and conditions before you can use a smart device. It’s impossible for us to read and analyze every single one of these agreements. Most people don’t read agreements like this, so we started counting how many times you have to agree to use devices when we review them.
For more creative pursuits, the inner screen serves as a large canvas for Samsung’s most chaotic new AI feature: sketch to image. All you have to do is draw a rough sketch and get the machine to add a photo to your image. The results are often ridiculous and sometimes surprisingly believable. Don’t try it out at Best Buy or something, just have fun with it.
The rest of Samsung’s AI features — both on the Z Fold 6 and the rest of Samsung’s flagship devices — remain a mixed bag of party tricks. Like Apple, Samsung promises that the very best stuff, like context-aware help from its virtual assistant, is coming later. What are you doing there, Bixby? It is me, Allison. All artificial intelligence on phones is still unknown. But the Z Fold 6 comes with something better than AI gimmicks: a very generous seven years of OS and security updates.
This phone costs over two thousand US dollars. Can we ask more than the improvement of flatness? I want an S Pen included, like it is for the less expensive Galaxy S24 Ultra, and some way to store it without having to buy a special case with a pen slot. Cool modular accessories? How about that? A better video conferencing experience! Everyone can get free screen protectors. Let’s dream big, people!

Unfolding a smartphone for dual-apps video conferencing: A case study in Komoot using Strava’s heat map
I wish it was better suited for video conferencing. It is nice that the laptop-style partially unfolded configuration makes for hands-free video calls. But the inner selfie camera is only positioned about halfway up the left side of the screen when you use it like this. It’s a deeply unflattering way to look at it. The small screen makes for a cramped experience when folded like that.
Still, I’ll never not be amazed that I can open this phone up and easily run two apps side by side. This was extremely helpful while planning a bike ride in Komoot while cross-referencing Strava’s heat map since I am too cheap to pay for a premium account on either service.
