In an interview with NBC, Trump stated that he would support public funding for in the event of a mandate requiring insurance companies to cover it. The procedure to treat infertility can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

We are doing this because we think it is great. And we need great children, beautiful children in our country, we actually need them,” Trump said in the interview.

Some anti-abortion activists want to restrict or ban IVF because the process typically involves discarding excess embryos. Many Republicans agree with the majority of voters who support access to the procedure.

The comments come as he appears to be trying to convince voters that he cares about reproductive rights despite concerns about voter backlash. Abortion is expected to be a key issue in the election, with Democrats warning voters that Republicans would further restrict access to reproductive healthcare if former Trump is elected.

He said in the interview that he favored exceptions for the lives of the mother, rape and incest, though he did not say how he would vote.

Democrats argue that Republicans would restrict access to reproductive healthcare if Trump were elected, even as they continue to raise the issue of abortion.

“There is only one candidate who will be in a position to protect our freedom to choose our health care, and that’s Vice President Kamala Harris,” the statement from spokeswoman Sarafina Chitika said.

Mike Pence, his former vice president, objected to that statement. Trump apparently said in a CBS News interview that he would not use a 19th-century anti-pornography law to restrict abortion pills. That statement also drew pushback from some activists.
