Trump addresses an apparent assassination attempt for the first time

The Secret Service and Donald Trump: An Ex-President Talks about “The Assassination of the Secret Service” and “What Do We Need to Know About It?”

The ex-president spoke publicly for the first time about the attempted assassination of the US Secret Service.

The interview, focused on his sons’ new cryptocurrency initiative and conducted by a crypto influencer, meandered to many of Trump’s typical campaign trail talking points.

He said that the Secret Service did a good job in protecting him while he played golf in West Palm Beach, Fla. He said he heard four to five gunshots and was whisked away in a golf cart.

Trump also recalled an assassination attempt against him in Butler, Pa., in June. He said it was a much better outcome than in June when one man died and two others were injured, and Donald Trump suffered a wound on his ear.

He also recalled a conversation with President Biden Monday, saying he was “very nice” on the call and that Biden asked whether Trump needed more people on his detail.

This comes after Trump blamed the “rhetoric” of Biden and Harris for the apparent attempt on his life in an interview with Fox News. He referred to Harris as “spiteful” in a post.

The Secret Service is investigating Musk’s comments on the attempted death of Trump and Kamala Harris in a Georgia victory dinner on Monday night

On Monday night at the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s Georgia Victory dinner in Atlanta, his running mate, Ohio Sen.JD Vance repeated that.

Two people have tried to kill Donald Trump in the last couple of months but no one else has tried to kill Kamala Harris. That’s strong proof that the left needs to tone down their rhetoric and cut back on their talking points.

Where things get dicier for Musk is his role as a major contractor for the US Department of Defense and NASA. According to Reuters, SpaceX signed a $1.8 billion contract in 2021 with the National Reconnaissance Office, which oversees US spy satellites. Late last year, the US Space Force signed a contract to build out military-grade low-earth-orbit satellite capabilities for the private company, Space Exploration Technologies. The US Navy is receiving internet through Starlink.

Both Biden and Harris have released statements condemning the apparent attempt on Trump’s life and political violence more broadly. In a statement to ABC News, the White House condemned Musk’s post. “Violence should only be condemned, never encouraged or joked about,” the statement says. “This rhetoric is irresponsible.”

“In my experience, the Secret Service would take such a comment very seriously,” says Michael German, a former FBI special agent and a liberty and national security fellow at NYU School of Law’s Brennan Center for Justice. Usually, agents would go out to interview the subject and make them aware that the agency takes statements like this seriously.

The United States Secret Service declined WIRED’s request to comment on Musk’s post. There are threats to our protectees and the secret service investigates them.
