Apple is Dead in the Water: When will it Be OK to Distinguish Between iTunes and the App Store, or What Will It Have to Do if It Go Lives on the Internet?
The developers who charge for things in their apps can now link out of the App Store. The fees are no longer used, and the court ruled Apple can not keep developers from placing links for purchases outside an app or limit the use of buttons.
The company said it would fight the ruling. “We strongly disagree with the decision. The senior director of corporate communications for Apple said that they will comply with the court order.
I am not saying Apple is dead in the water. It is still a titan, and Cook is a supply chain wizard. As the company faces tariffs, there is probably no better person to be at the helm. I can’t recall a worse start to the year for Apple. Add it all up, and by the end of 2025, you have new costs from tariffs and potentially massively reduced revenues from regulators. The company probably needs to build something new that can take over from the iPhone in revenue and market share, and it probably needs to do it sooner rather than later.
Apple Inclusive Taxes and Google Ad-Principle Uncertainty: A Five-Year High-Energy Macaulay Deal

Apple’s stock fell the most in five years on April 3rd, after Trump announced his tariffs. Shares have recovered a bit as those taxes have… remained unclear. They’ll either impact product sales or eat into Apple’s profit margins.
Nobody knows for sure, I say could. First, the Trump administration was set to impose 54 percent tariffs on China (and others on India and Vietnam). They were bumped up to a cumulative 104 percent and then they went up to a grand total of 145 percent. Apple got a reprieve after it was said that electronics would be subject to separate taxes in May or June.
We’re currently in the remedies stage of Google’s search antitrust trial after judge Amit Mehta ruled last year that Google has a monopoly in search and advertising. In May, there was a revelation about how much Apple was willing to pay for the default search engine in Safari.
A colleague of mine, David Pierce, argued in favor of paying for the right if it wasn’t exclusive, after he was asked about the arrangement on Wednesday.
The Good, the Bad, or the Ugly: A Comparative Analysis of Apple’s Second Quarter Q2 Earnings and Software Development

Apple reported its latest quarterly earnings on Wednesday under the backdrop of a court ruling that’s poised to upend the company’s App Store business and tariff uncertainty that could spur price increases for devices including the iPhone. At least on this occasion, Apple’s revenue numbers weren’t top of mind for tech industry onlookers like they ordinarily would be. Overall revenue in Q2 was $97.4 billion, a rise of 5 percent when compared to the same time last year, and services are at an all-time high. The iPad was particularly strong and revenue increased 15 percent, thanks to new products.
The refreshed iPad Air is one of the hardware released by Apple in the last few months. February saw the introduction of the iPhone 16E, which was designed to compete with other lower-cost phones. But Apple’s software team has been going through a rough patch following a series of stumbles and embarrassments.
The company has been trying to build out its own artificial intelligence capabilities that are more similar to OpenAI’s. Improvements to the company’s assistant were delayed in early March. Apple is rumored to be integrating Google’s Gemini to its Apple Intelligence software suite this fall to help keep pace.
Cook downplayed the impact of President Trumps tariffs in an interview with CNBC. Apple’s supply chain and manufacturing operation were identified as a potential buffer. “If you look at the US, over half of the US sales of iPhone come from India,” he said. “If you look at the other products, Mac and iPad and AirPods and the Watch, almost all of the country of origin is Vietnam.” Much has been made about the possibility of Apple’s next iPhone lineup getting a price hike. He said that it was important to look at the individual parts of the phone.
