An Apple Pencil for the iPad: Procreate, Barrel Roll, and Find My Device Location System Enhanced by a New Magnetic Interface
Apple would not comment on the record about this when I attended an iPad hands-on event today. The Apple Pencil uses a new magnetic interface to stay attached to the tablet, and is highlighted in the company’s marketing materials. Even though Apple had to move the placement of the interface slightly to accommodate the iPad’s front-facing landscape camera, there are no details about what is new about this interface. The new interface does not offer faster charging, faster pairs or more secure magnets. It feels practically identical to the existing system.
The Apple Pencil Pro can be created by app developers. Some examples provided by Procreate CEO James Cuda include brushes that “respond in entirely new ways” thanks to the Barrel Roll feature or using the squeeze feature to activate software shortcuts. The Barrel Roll feature also allows animators to move and rotate objects at the same time while recording actions in Procreate Dreams.
Adding support for Apple’s Find My device location system is also a welcome update for scatterbrained users who frequently lose their stylus. I know how hard it is to find an apple pencil when you misplace it and how expensive it is to find it again months later after your house has been torn apart.
Final Cut Camera: Putting the iPad through the Pros and Constraints on Its New Power and AI-Powered Logic Pro
Apple is launching a new app called Final Cut Camera, which is specifically built to support live multicamera production. The app syncs with the updated Final Cut Pro app and lets users “connect multiple iPhones or iPads to capture additional angles during a live multicam shoot or record professional video.”
There are more iPad accessories getting an upgrade than the Apple Pencil. Apple also showed off a redesigned Magic Keyboard with an aluminum palm rest, a larger trackpad with haptic feedback, and a function row. It also comes in silver and space black to match the iPad Pro.
Apple didn’t just give the iPad Pro a physical makeover — it even added its next-generation M4 processor. The new iPad Pro comes with a large amount of storage and silver and black colors. The 11-inch model starts at $1199, and the 13-inch starts at $1,299.
Along with improved CPU performance, the M4 model delivers a more powerful Neural Engine that Apple says is 60 times faster than the first one it introduced in the A11 Bionic model in 2017. 39 trillion operators per second means it can solve math calculations in less than a second. We are yet to put the iPad through its paces, but we are close to seeing the Windows laptops with the 45 TOPS chip.
The iPad Air offers two stereo speakers and mics while the iPad Pro has four mics and a quad speaker system. The Pro models will have a better sound than the iPad Air if it is anything like its predecessor. That, combined with the aforementioned OLED display, means the iPad Pro will probably remain the best tablet to watch movies on.
Additionally, Apple revealed new AI-powered features for its digital audio workstation, Logic Pro, including a new virtual bass player and keyboard player.
Apple just wrapped up its “Let Loose” event, where it showed off the newest additions to its iPad lineup in nearly two years. There was more to the event than just iPads, as we also got a first look at some new accessories and software.
Dynamic Caching on the iPad: A Comparative Study of Two Competing Spectroscopies of the 2016-2019 Semi-Inclusive Proton
We compared the raw specs of both tablets so you can make an educated decision about which is best for you. We will soon be publishing our full reviews of the tablets, so be sure to check back.
The new iPad Pro also comes with GPU upgrades and includes hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading, which can help game developers improve complex scenes. The support for Dynamic Caching tech on the iPad is the first of it’s kind, and it’s thanks to the M4 chip.
The only answer I am coming up with is the lack of processing power on older slates, but if the M2 chipset inside the 2022 iPad Pro is already not powerful enough to handle a few new stylus tricks, that doesn’t speak very well to the performance prowess of Apple’s silicon.
