The Verge – A Review of Incompatible Games for the Switch and the Nintendo XBose Generating Console (XBOX 2016)
is a senior reviewer who has worked at The Verge since its founding in 2011. His coverage areas include audio (Sonos, Apple, Bose, Sony, etc.), home theater, smartphones, photography, and more.
Even titles that we assumed might be fully incompatible — Ring Fit Adventure, 1-2-Switch, and the various Labo kit assembly games — are supported to some extent on the Switch 2 if you stick to original Joy-Cons or use other workaround methods that Nintendo spells out. The only game that will not work for the time being is the Virtual Reality Labo kit. I don’t think Nintendo can be faulted for that.
The company also divides “games with startup issues” — Doom Eternal, Rocket League, NBA 2K25, and Warframe are among these — and “games that are playable, but have some in-game compatibility issues” into separate lists. The company notes on the site that they are working with publishing and developing partners to improve compatibility. The work on the console will continue until the console is released in early June.
Observation: The Nintendo Switch 2 is beyond the OLED, but it’s much bigger than the old one, and its sticks will drift
Look, I love black. My wardrobe is mostly black. The Switch 2 looks off to me. The original Switch may have launched with a gray Joy-Con option, but the neon red and blue controllers that also launched on day one became iconic. Now, the Switch 2 has just splashes of colors, and they’re mostly hidden.
No, it’s not an OLED. And yes, Nintendo will almost certainly repeat its strategy of launching a Switch 2 with that display technology down the line. Right now there is a lot to like about the new screen of the Switch 2.
Its much larger 7.9-inch size is a blessing for the eyesight of a generation that grew up with Nintendo consoles — myself included. I was pleasantly surprised that the company went with a 120 Hz panel, that supports variable refresh rate and wider HDR color.
The new Joy-Con can attach via magnets, are bigger, and look better than the old one. Will the sticks drift?

The Nintendo Switch 2: Where are I? What I can’t do about Donkey Kong Bananza and his Third-Dimensional Platformer
Just imagine: the joy of Zoom meetings, now integrated into your gameplay. Voice chat and video streaming are the worst parts about gaming to me. I will not be using these features to scare my friends away by yelling at them.
I play a lot of my Switch games with a licensed PowerA replica GameCube controller. While it unfortunately uses AA batteries, it includes an additional ZL button that lets me play most of my Switch games. The GameCube controller for the Switch 2 has a nub of a ZL button instead of a full button, and it comes with rechargeable batteries. The Pro controller replacement was not what I was hoping for.
$449.99 is higher than I was expecting for the Switch 2. I was hoping for $399. But still I’ll be doing everything I can to snag the $499.99 bundle with Mario Kart World, a game that costs an eye-watering $79.99 on its own.
I am not going to play a lot of Mario Kart World but I was waiting for Nintendo to release a single-player killer app. I wouldn’t have bet on Donkey Kong Bananza leading the charge.
He may be as old as Mario, but this is only Donkey Kong’s second-ever 3D platformer, his first since 1999’s Donkey Kong 64, and his first solo game since Tropical Freeze in 2014. He is an unlikely candidate for a system seller. That could be what Mario Kart is for.

Why is Nintendo charging for its Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour app? Is F-Zero GX the best anti-gravity racer ever played?
There is no longer a free game bundled with a new system, but why isNintendo charging for the Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour app? Although it does appear to include a small selection of mini-games, the app seems to be more of a highly-polished interactive tutorial than a game.
Wii Sports not only helped make that console a huge hit for Nintendo, it also cleverly introduced gamers to the Wiimote and Nunchuck’s unique capabilities and motion-controlled gaming. It feels like a similar idea, but with less replay value.
The Super Smash Bros. logo was going to flash across my screen, but I was still waiting. The trailer for Kirby Air Riders looked like it was for a new game and I almost jumped out of my seat.
It wasn’t, unfortunately, though SSB creator Masahiro Sakurai, who also directed the original Air Ride, is directing Riders. He hopes he will be up for another SSB.
F-Zero GX is the best anti-gravity racer I have ever played, and it is among the GameCube games Nintendo is planning to bring to its new console as a Nintendo Switch Online feature. I can’t wait to play the games from Nintendo’s most adorable console in higher resolution without the need for a emulators.
I decided to stick with downloads for the Nintendo Switch and wouldn’t be returning to physical versions of it for the second game in the series.
But Nintendo’s reveal of its new virtual game cards last week has changed my mind. Being able to more easily move games between several versions of the Switch without the consoles needing a constant internet connection is exactly the upgrade Nintendo needed to introduce to streamline digital game management with the Switch 2 enroute.
