Inside the Reddest County: A Museum of Black History with a Restoring and Healing Embedded in Shelby County, Ala.
In a small town in Shelby County, Ala., — often referred to by the Republican Party as the reddest county in the U.S. — a new museum exhibit is dedicated to Black history. After people who were slaves were emancipated, they were given their freedom and not much else. Tyler Jones is part of the studio behind the project. This studio has been working in collaboration with the Wallace Center for Arts and Reconciliation to reframe the narratives of Black descendant communities through embodied storytelling. The significance of transforming a plantation from 1841 into a space dedicated to reparative history and healing was highlighted by Jones. You can look at the project in photos and videos.

What the United States Did On Iran During the World War II: Retaliation to Israel’s War of Attrition and the Nuclear Program
Tonight is a big night for more than 100 high school theater stars gathered in New York City for the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, also known as the Jimmy Awards. Nominees on Broadway are able to put on a show in 10 days. 150,000 students from various schools across the country compete for a spot in the final, which will be held at the Minskoff Theatre. Iran is thinking about how it can retaliate to the U.S. attack on its nuclear program. The Revolutionary Guards of Iran made a video overnight saying the US will face consequences and that they will be the ones who end the war.
Benjamin Netanyahu stated yesterday that Israel wouldn’t be dragged into a war of attrition nor would it end the conflict until it achieved its objectives. Israel wants to degrade Iran’s missiles and nuclear program.
The administration defended its decision to strike three nuclear targets in Iran. US officials say the strikes were carried out to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. The United States’ decision to intervene came a week after Israel launched a series of strikes on Iran. The U.S. officials say the American strikes destroyed Iran’s nuclear program, but independent experts say it’s not done. Here are some things the U.S. did on Iran.
What is the impact of the US bombing of Natanz on Iran’s nuclear programme? – A case study of the underground Fordow site
Good morning. You’re reading the Up First newsletter. It will be delivered to your inbox and you can subscribe to the Up First radio show to hear the news of the day.
The IAEA doesn’t report such leaks. And it appears that Iran had moved the enriched uranium stockpiles in the days before the bombings. The United States has said that the target of its bombings was the facilities, so they understand they are not getting at the nuclear material.
We want Iran to allow intrusive inspections into its programme, so that we can see this done with diplomatic agreements. The job of US and Israeli intel is to assess the damage if that doesn’t happen. They’re looking at communications intercepts, or trying to recruit people on the inside to reveal information.
Obviously, more problematic is the underground sites. When we initially assessed Israel’s bombing of Natanz, three days later I saw a very small crater above the underground hall. I could work out and link it to a type of Earth-penetrator weapon that Israel is known to have. When it went in it would leave a small crater and then the damage would be underground. The US bombed it with a bigger version of the Earth penetrator. So the damage is more extensive.
A lot of the damage is on the surface, so it’s a question of knowing what the building did [in terms of its role in the nuclear program]. We use the information we have about the sites that are attacked. It is pretty straightforward.
There aren’t many researchers who are able to assess the impact of the bombings. We have decades of experience with the Iranian nuclear programme, so we know their facilities and activities very well. We have the ability to buy satellite imagery. Every day we try to buy some. Analysts who have decades of experience analyze the images. We also have lots of contacts with governments, and we have colleagues who also have contacts with governments.
Iran’s nuclear programme is for peaceful uses, but experts have long believed that it was close to being able to build a nuclear weapon. Israel has since carried out more attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities following the US attacks. On 23 June, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported that “very significant damage is expected to have occurred” at the underground Fordow site.
