OpenAI CEO Greg Brockman: The Most Beneficial Technology Humankind Has Ever Been: Founder and Chief Operating Officer Mira Murati
The company said that Greg Brockman will be stepping down from his position as chair of the board. No reason was given for Brockman’s change in position.
A company statement says that a review “concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities.” Mira became interim CEO while OpenAI searches for a full-time replacement.
Artificial intelligence researchers were surprised and triggered an arms race among large tech companies to build powerful artificial intelligence after discovering the surprising capabilities of ChatGPT. The success of the bot led to Altman being a tech celebrity consulted by world leaders on the future path of artificial intelligence.
He was confident that the technology would be beneficial, saying it was like his life’s work from childhood. He said that this will be the most beneficial technology humanity has yet invented.
We are on a path to self-destruction as a species, he said while sitting alongside executives from Meta and Google. If we want to flourish for millions of years more, we need new technology.
Mira Murati: I was an engineer and worked in automotive, VR and augmented reality. I was doing applications of the technology in the real world while I was working at Leap Motion and at the now-demolished model X company. AGI was the most important technology that we built, and I wanted to be a part of it. It was only at Open Artificial Intelligence that they were the only ones who worked on the capabilities of the technology and made sure that it went well. When I joined in 2018, I began working on our supercomputing strategy and managing a couple of research teams.

It is difficult to remember big-deal moments. Crazy things happen every day as we live in the future. But I do remember GPT-3 being able to translate. I also speak Italian, Albanian and English. I remember just creating pair prompts of English and Italian. And all of a sudden, even though we never trained it to translate in Italian, it could do it fairly well.
When OpenAI was reorganizing so that it became a for-profit entity, you were in the early days. How did you feel about that?
It was not something that was done lightly. You need to deploy our models at scale to understand how to make them better. It costs a lot of money. You have to have a business plan because your generous nonprofit donors will not give billions like investors would. As far as I know, there’s no other structure like this. The key thing was protecting the mission of the nonprofit.
According to the article, there are three researchers who are related to the work of OpenAI, including one who is a lead research on GPT-4.
“This was the board doing its duty to the mission of the nonprofit, which is to make sure that OpenAI builds AGI that benefits all of humanity,” Sutskever told employees at an emergency all-hands on Friday afternoon, according to a report in The Information.
OpenAI declined to provide further comment on the situation. Neither Brockman nor Sutskever responded to any of the requests for comment. Inquiries sent to three researchers who quit were unanswered.

He told me in May that the company ran without him because it had an “incredibly great team” that could do a lot of things. Some things are only possible if you have a CEO, or if you need to kill a project with a partner. At the end of the day, he would bat out responses and accumulate those items on his phone. Then he would go back to speechifying, meeting developers, and taking tea with prime ministers.
