An Unsigned Letter from Sam Altman and Greg Brockman at the OpenAI Board of Supervisors over the Altman-Beckman Scenario
The anonymous letter boosted by Musk makes allegations against Altman and also Greg Brockman, an OpenAI cofounder who was removed as board chair last week and then quit over Altman’s treatment. At OpenAI, we saw a disturbing pattern of manipulation and deceit by Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, driven by their obsession with achieving artificial general intelligence.
Along the roller-coaster ride of the past few days, several possible reasons for Altman’s removal have been seemingly eliminated. Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s chief operating officer, wrote in a memo that the board’s decision wasn’t made because of malfeasance or anything related to their financial, business, and safety practices. This was a breakdown in communication between Sam and the board.”
The crisis around OpenAI was created by the shock firing of CEO Sam Altman, and needed fewer than 100 characters from Musk.
A reply to an email was posted on Hacker News, which allows anonymous posts, and a copy of the letter was found on Board.net, according to WIRED. A person said they removed the letter from their possession because they didn’t know if the contents were legit.
“These seem like concerns worth investigating,” Musk wrote in his post linking to the unsigned letter, which is addressed to OpenAI’s board and purports to have been written by concerned former employees of the company. WIRED has been unable to verify any of the claims.
Musk has himself been accused of similar behavior at several of his own ventures, which include automaker Tesla, rocket maker SpaceX, and brain interface developer Neuralink.
