US President Joe Biden on Sunday announced new rules that will ban the sale of American-made artificial intelligence chips to Iran and North Korea. The rules will limit the sale of AI chips to companies operating data centres in the US, which is the world’s largest data centre market. They also set security standards for AI models that are built at federal sites.

After US President Donald Trump nominated Lee Zeldin as the new Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) administrator, environmental group NRDC said, “The EPA protects clean air, water, and public health and that is what we will hold the administrator accountable for.” NRDC added, “We can meet demand for data centres without scrappingEPA rules to clean up dirty power plants and cut climate pollution.”

Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered data centers in the US are expected to be using 8% of total power in the country by 2030, up from 3% in 2022, Goldman Sachs said. The amount of power being used by data centres in the US will be “the likes of which hasn’t been seen in a generation”, it added.
