Millions of phones were used to map the ionosphere

A study has shown that phone-based mappings of the Earth’s ionospheric tec and GPS provide a doubling of the coverage of the ionosphere. The study found that while 14% of the ionosphere was measured by stations alone, 21% was measured by phones alone. Over large portions of the world, phones provide measurements of the ionosphere at times and places missed by monitoring stations.
