The Justice Department wants to know how to change a search engine monopoly
The US Department of Justice on Monday opened its antitrust trial against Google over its search engine business. Google’s lawyers argued that the DOJ’s list of remedies for the case is a “wishlist for competitors” and that it will enable competitors to get resources that took Google decades to develop. Google had been found to be a monopoly in the case.

Google has been asked by Justice Department to either divest from Android phones or have the court supervise its Android division to monitor any possible instances of Google using Android to kneecap rivals. In August, Justice Department ruled that Google had acted as an illegal monopoly in its search engine and had to be brought to justice.
SearchGPT is a direct attack on Google by OpenAI
Software startup OpenAI has released a prototype of an AI search engine titled ‘SearchGPT’. The company said that the new tool is “designed to help users connect with publishers by prominently citing and linking to them in searches”. It added that the publishers will have a way to “manage how they appear in OpenAI search features”.
The search feature has been screwed up
After Google’s AI-based search engine AI Overviews advised people to eat rocks, put glue on pizza and jump off the Golden Gate Bridge, it admitted it needed to make adjustments. “We’ll continue to monitor users’ feedback and adjust the feature as necessary,” Google said in a post. Google added it’ll continue to rely on Reddit’s user-generated content for AI-based searches.

Google is working on an AI-powered product named ‘OpenAI’, a report said. The product could reportedly be powered by Bing’s search engine. Earlier, a report by Bloomberg had also suggested OpenAI was working on an AI-based product capable of searching the internet. The report added that Google could tease new products like Pixel 9 and Pixel Tablet 2.

DuckDuckGo has added a PrivacyPro browser app, which it claims will be an “improved privacy browser” for users in Europe and the US. The app allows users to avoid tracking from apps, ad trackers and social media platforms. DuckDuckGo claimed its search engine doesn’t even attempt to track users’ search history, and users can choose from whichever location they prefer.

Kevin McReynolds, the creative director of YouTube, spoke about the future of AI and said, “You’re almost Certainly going to want to use some of these AI tools to help produce content.” He added, “What you want from a search engine and what you’re going to want from an agent is a little more complicated than just asking a question and getting an answer.”

The US Justice Department (DoJ) in its case against Google and DuckDuckGo accused them of using their dominant positions in search engine market to favour one platform over another. Google said that DuckDuckGo made a “quixotic” but fruitless effort to have its privacy-focused search engine implemented in browsers’ incognito mode and was stymied by the Google deals.
